The African Feminist Common Position on Decent and Dignified Work in the Platform Economy

On behalf of African feminists, workers, and activists in social justice movements, we request your endorsement of the African Feminist Common Position on Decent and Dignified Work in the Platform Economy.

As African feminists and social justice advocates, we stand at a critical moment in history. The rise of the digital economy is reshaping our world, yet it continues to deepen colonial patterns of exploitation and inequality, especially for women, gender expansive persons, and other marginalised groups. Platform labour is expanding, but so are the injustices of precarity, invisibility, and harm. The 113th International Labour Conference is a pivotal opportunity to demand feminist, rights-based, and Africa-centered standards for decent and dignified work. We call for a radical reimagining of the digital economy, one rooted in feminist digital justice, where people, not profit, hold power over technology, data, and platforms.

This Common Position outlines an African feminist vision on decent and dignified work in the platform economy, with the following key demands:

Demand 1: Decent and Dignified Work in the Platform Economy is Non-Negotiable

Demand 2: End Exploitation of African Labour and Data

Demand 3: Center Feminist and African Alternatives

Demand 4: Adopt Gender-Transformative Laws and Policies

Demand 5: From Surviving to Thriving
